Mattel’s Barbie Girls is a virtual world for girls based on the new Barbie Girls product line. Girls create their own avatar and dress them with different fashions and accessories. They can create their own apartments with furniture and unique accents. Girls can interact with others through filtered chat, form friendships, and invite others to in-world parties.
Thrust Interactive provided extensive expertise in enterprise technologies to help scale the Barbie Girls platform to thousands of concurrent users. The two-phase chat filter system was completely rewritten to accommodate for multiple languages and terms.
With 200,000 registered users after one week and 5 million after 4 months, it is considered the fastest growing virtual community in history, even outpacing Second Life.
